indoor herb gardening kit

Carrots do best when planted in rows two to three inches apart. After they are transplanted, the carrot plants will need to be sown again every two to three weeks. The final sowing should be done around midsummer. Rake the soil till it has a fine tilth to ensure you grow the most prolific crop. The seeds should be sown one-quarter inch deep. Space rows six inches apart. Mix small seeds with dry sandy sand, to aid in their germinating. Label the seedlings with the variety and the date of sowing.

The soil should be loose after sowing. Dig the soil down to about an inch. It should be ready to accept carrot seeds. Turn under any small pieces of plant material to enrich the soil. Place the carrots in rows of about one to two feet each after sowing. You should ensure that each row is ridged to allow them to grow parallel. The spacing should not exceed eight to twelve inches. Spread the seedlings evenly and work the soil into the beds.

When the seeds germinate, ensure that the soil is not dry and brittle. They should be watered lightly every week until they become roots. Between waterings, you should make sure the soil is well-drained. They can also be harvested as they grow and stored for future uses. After harvesting them, store them in a moist place for several month. This will preserve them and keep weeds away.

Carrots grow well in partial sun and need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day. They will thrive even in partial shade. To reduce the stress, mulch the soil with sand or peat moss. Then, sow the seeds in the ground. If you would like to grow carrots indoors, you will need a 12 in. pot. It is important to drain the water from the pot.

You must test the soil before you plant carrots in your garden. You can contact your county extension agency to test the soil. They can provide you with a soil sample, as well as guidance on how to grow carrots. To allow the root system to develop, the roots require a few inches water during the planting process. Sprinkle water on top of the straw or shredded bark to cover the carrot seeds.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
