How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an evergreen plant. If it's not located in the right area, it will only last one season. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination can take up to ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. The leaves can be stored in glass jars or bags in their refrigerator.
