FAQ

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It's all about planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

What length of time can I keep an indoor flower alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is easy. All you have to do is remove the soil and put in fresh compost.

Do I have to purchase special equipment in order to grow vegetables on my own?

You're not wrong. You only need a trowel, shovel, watering can, and a rake.

How much space do vegetable gardens need?

It is best to remember that 1/2 pound of seed will be required for every square foot. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrients-rich water to feed plants. Aquaponics is a system that combines fish tanks and plants to create an ecosystem that is self-sufficient. It's like having a farm right in your backyard.

What is the best vegetable garden layout?

It is important to consider where you live when planning your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, it is best to plant vegetables in the same area as your home. For maximum yield, however, it is best to space your plants if you are in a rural area.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
