NIKIJabbour has tips for extending the growing seasons in her new book, The Year RoundVegetable Gardener. Canadian weather allows frost-free produce that can be harvested all through the winter to be grown, making it possible to grow fruits and vegetables year-round. This book has been downloaded more than 100,000 times. This book is ideal for both beginning and advanced gardeners.

Niki grows 30 varieties of vegetables in the winter, including lettuce, tomatoes, and other fruits. During this season, timing is crucial. Carrot seeds should be sown in August. Leafy and heading crops can be planted in October. In the fall, the soil is perfect for mulching. Mulch should be piled up to 18 inches high, then allowed to settle to 12 inches. The neighbors will envy the mulched beds.

For example, Niki's garden is divided into three seasons: warm-season and cool-season vegetables. A polytunnel consists of large structures made from steel supports and covered with a sheet of plastic. It's used to grow spring greens and summer vegetables as well as root crops. It is also used in the fall harvest. When planting your garden, it's important to plan the seasons. However, the growing season is dependent on the climate.

Cold frames are a great way to extend the growing season in your garden. A polytunnel may not be necessary to grow vegetables, but it can make your garden more productive. It is a good idea to buy a plastic cold frame for winter. You can create a microclimate without spending a lot on a greenhouse.

FAQ

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

What is the most important thing to do before you start a new garden?

First, prepare the soil before you start a garden. This includes adding organic material such as composted horse manure, grass clippings or leaves, straw and the like, which provides plant nutrients. Next, place seeds or seedlings in prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. You can have your farm right at your house!

How much space does a vegetable garden require?

The rule of thumb is to use 1/2 pound seed per square foot. You will need 100 pounds of seed if your area is 10 feet by 10 foot (3 meters by 3 metres).

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

You're not wrong. You only need a trowel, shovel, watering can, and a rake.

How can you prepare the soil to grow vegetables in your garden?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. Next, add organic matter like composted manure and leaves, grass clippings or straw. Let the plants grow by watering well.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil temperature is highest and plants grow most quickly. If you live somewhere cold, it is best to wait until July or august.

How To

Basil Growing Tips

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you plan to grow it outside, make sure there is good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in small pots filled with potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination typically takes around ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. To drain excess moisture, fill each container with potting mixture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. The leaves can be stored in glass jars or bags in their refrigerator.
