A container that is large enough to accommodate the herb plants you desire is the most important step in starting an organic garden herb garden. Then, add some soil to the top of the pot. Healthy soil is the best, as it will produce the highest yielding harvest. When choosing a container, go for the highest quality and preferably a multi-purpose soil. After your herb plants have been established, you can apply vegetable or organic fertilizers.

There are many ways to plant herbs. You can use pots, containers or even the ground. It's crucial to use the correct soil mix if you intend to grow herbs within a container. Your herb garden should have well-draining soil that retains nutrients and allows for adequate air circulation. To prevent soil-borne diseases, it is important to use the right potting earth. Many brands of potting soil, such as potting clay, contain chemical fertilizers or other additives that aren't approved for organic gardening. There are a few easy ways to check if your potting soil is safe to use in your herb garden.

Cut herbs from the plants to be used in cooking. To do this, cut the stem about a third of the way up from the ground. Wash the leaves and stems carefully and place them on a towel or paper bag. After the leaves are completely dried, you can hang them up to dry. Herbs can be dried for as long as two weeks by hanging them in the sun. If you don't have a window for your herb garden, consider growing them in a container. If your window is bright enough, you can use a grow lamp to illuminate them.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
