Plan a Summer Garden

vegetable gardening guide

You might plan your garden around your vacation during July, one of the hottest months. Depending on your location, you might want to plant many plants and maintain them continuously throughout the season. On the other hand, if your hot season is long, you might want to limit the number of plants you plant and instead focus on the most vital parts of the garden, such as the roots. If this is the case, remember to water your plants often to keep them healthy.

Shade trees are important to protect the garden from the sun's rays. Unfortunately, not all gardens are located in a cool forest, so shade trees are not a common feature. There are many ways to make a shaded area. Plant vines that reach the ground or build a gazebo filled with perennial plantings. Or hang colorful umbrellas from loungers. You should also plant trees that can grow into shade if your plans are to move your garden.

To create a cooler space outdoors, you can build a patio underneath existing trees. A water feature will keep your garden cool. You can add vine plants to your garden that can climb over arbors for shade. Plant drought-tolerant plants that are able to withstand the heat.

For summer vegetables to thrive, they need at least six to eight hours of sun each day. You should give them six to eight hours. They will grow vegetative and lanky and produce smaller fruits. Crops that are not getting enough water can show symptoms such as flower abortion or misshapen fruits. Foliar disease can result from not giving your plants enough sun. Consult a gardening manual if you are having trouble determining the best gardening techniques.

For a late-season garden, you can use ornamental grasses and late-season perennials. These plants will become a beautiful tapestry when they are intertwined with the grasses. These plants are perfect for sunny garden settings and can be easily maintained and deer resistant. These plants are suitable for sunny areas. You can plant these plants with your children, in addition to the variety.

How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. The pots should be covered with clear plastic wrap. Germination can take up to ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
