FAQ

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

Which type of lighting best suits indoor plant growth?

Because they emit less heat then incandescent lamps, floralescent lights can be used indoors to grow plants. They provide constant lighting that doesn't flicker or dimm. Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

What month is the best time to start a garden?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when the soil is warmest and plants grow fastest. If you live outside of a warm climate, you might be better off waiting until July or August.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours in indirect sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
