FAQ

How can I find out what type of soil my house has?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Soil testing is another option. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It depends upon the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours per day of direct sunlight. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

When beginning a garden, the first thing to do is to prepare the soil. This includes adding organic matter like composted cow manure, grass clippings leaves, straw, and so on, which will help to provide plant nutrients. Next, plant seedlings or seeds in the prepared holes. Then, water well.

What is the difference between hydroponic gardening and aquaponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. You can have your farm right at your house!

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
