FAQ
Can I grow vegetables indoors
Yes, it is possible for vegetables to be grown inside during winter months. You will need to buy a greenhouse and grow lights. Before you do this, make sure to verify the local laws.
Which vegetables are best to grow together?
It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.
What is the best vegetable garden layout?
It all depends on where you live. For easy harvesting, you can plant vegetables together if the area is large. If you live in rural areas, space your plants to maximize yield.
What time should I plant herbs in my garden?
When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.
What is the best way to determine what kind of soil I have?
It is easy to tell the difference by the color of your dirt. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil tests are another option. These tests measure the number of nutrients present in the soil.
Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?
Because they emit less heat that incandescents, floriescent lights are a good choice for growing indoor plants. They are also consistent in lighting, and do not flicker or dimm. Fluorescent bulbs come in both compact fluorescent (CFL) and regular varieties. CFLs can use up to 75% more energy than traditional bulbs.

How To
Use organic fertilizers in your garden
Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.
There are many types of organic fertilizers.
* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.
* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.
* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.
* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.
* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.
* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.
Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.
Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
