When is the best month to plant a vegetable garden in my area?

Planting vegetables in April and June is the best time. This is when the soil is warmest and plants grow fastest. If you live in colder climates, you might wait until July or Aug.

What is the first thing to do when starting a garden?

Preparing the soil is the most important step in starting a garden. This involves adding organic matter like composted manure and grass clippings as well as leaves, straw, straw, and other materials that provide nutrients to the soil. Next, plant seedlings or seeds in the prepared holes. Water thoroughly.

When is it best to plant herbs?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. Plant them in full sun for best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
