FAQ

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather cools down, transplant the pepper or tomato plants outdoors.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. They should be in full sun to get the best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. When plants are growing, place them in bright indirect lighting. After three to four weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Keep them hydrated.

How do you prepare soil for a vegetable gardening?

Preparing soil is simple for a vegetable garden. First, remove all weeds in the area where you plan to plant vegetables. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. Then water the plants well and wait for them to sprout.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. Aquaponics is like having your own farm in your home.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
