Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Not really. A shovel, trowel and watering container are all you need.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. To encourage new growth, it is important to repot your indoor plant every few months. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

What is a planting plan?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What time should I plant herbs in my garden?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. They should be in full sun to get the best results. It depends on the type of plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
