How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
